The Braves have added veteran right-handed pitcher John Brebbia on a minor league contract, per MLB.com’s transactions log. He’ll report to Triple-A Gwinnett and gives Atlanta additional experienced bullpen depth off the 40-man roster.
Brebbia, 35, was released by the Tigers just last week. He had signed with Detroit during the offseason on a one-year, $2.75 million deal. While sidelined for a period due to a triceps strain, he managed just 18 2/3 innings with a 7.71 ERA. Although poor luck—such as a high .339 BABIP and low 56.6% strand rate—played a part, his 11.8% walk rate and 21.5% strikeout rate were also less than ideal.
Detroit decided to part ways with him, and Atlanta picked him up—just as they did last year. Brebbia was let go by the White Sox in August 2023 after recording a 6.29 ERA and joined the Braves later that season. In a brief September stint, he posted a 2.70 ERA over 6 2/3 innings before hitting free agency and signing with Detroit.
Despite recent struggles, Brebbia has a strong career résumé. From 2017 to 2023, he posted a 3.42 ERA across 299 2/3 innings for the Cardinals and Giants, along with a 25.5% strikeout rate and
7.2% walk rate. Even during a tough 2023 season, he maintained solid underlying numbers—27.7% strikeout rate and 7.9% walk rate.
Atlanta’s bullpen has been average so far in 2025, ranking 14th in MLB with a 3.70 ERA. With Joe Jiménez and Daysbel Hernández currently on the IL, the low-risk signing of Brebbia offers the Braves an experienced arm who could help if he regains form.
