The Toronto Raptors have waived Javon Freeman-Liberty and Sasha Vezenkov, opening up a roster spot.
Freeman-Liberty, the only Raptor on a partially guaranteed contract, was on the books for $100,000 this year, with his salary set to increase to $150,000 tomorrow, $800,000 on opening night, and $1.9 million on January 10, 2025. Despite averaging 14.3 points, 3.3 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 0.8 steals per game in the Summer League, he was likely to be cut due to the influx of guards and wings on the roster.
Vezenkov’s situation was more complex. The Raptors acquired him on June 27 in a trade with the Sacramento Kings, which also involved Jalen McDaniels and Davion Mitchell, among others. Vezenkov, a former Euroleague MVP with Olympiacos, had signed with the Kings but requested a trade in early June. Although rumors suggested he might return to Olympiacos, his contractual obligations to the Raptors prevented an immediate move.
Vezenkov faced two choices: agree to a buyout with Toronto or forfeit his $6.6 million salary. He chose to leave the NBA, forfeiting his salary, allowing the Raptors to clear his contract from their books.
The Raptors now have one open roster spot and one training camp spot, creating flexibility for potential signings or trades. This move allows Toronto to sign a free agent, bring back players like Precious Achiuwa or Christian Koloko, or gain leverage in trade negotiations involving Bruce Brown.
