SIGNIFICANT BOOST: The Giants Recall Another Top-Notch Fans Favorite For MLB Debut

The San Francisco Giants have optioned right-handed pitcher Sean Hjelle to Triple-A Sacramento and called up fellow righty Carson Seymour in a corresponding move. Seymour, already on the 40-man roster, is now poised to make his major league debut once he appears in a game.

Seymour, 26, was originally drafted by the New York Mets in the sixth round of the 2021 draft and joined the Giants in the 2022 trade deadline deal that brought J.D. Davis to San Francisco and sent Darin Ruf to New York. Since then, Seymour has steadily advanced through the Giants’ farm system with consistent performances.

In 2023, he spent the season at Double-A, primarily as a starter. He logged 112 2/3 innings over 28 appearances (23 starts), posting a 3.99 ERA, a 24.5% strikeout rate, a 9.2% walk rate, and a 49.5% ground ball rate. He moved up to Triple-A later that year and maintained similar numbers, finishing with 134 1/3 innings, a 22.1% strikeout rate, a 10.1% walk rate, and an improved 53.5% ground ball rate.

To protect him from the Rule 5 draft, the Giants added Seymour to their 40-man roster in November. So far in 2025, he has continued to deliver steady results, pitching 74 innings over 15 starts with a 3.89 ERA, a 25.6% strikeout rate, an 11.4% walk rate, and a 53.6% ground ball rate.

Baseball America ranks Seymour as the No. 18 prospect in the Giants’ organization, highlighting his ground-ball-inducing two-seamer and a sharp slider as strengths, though they question his inconsistent changeup and suggest he may project as a middle reliever. FanGraphs is higher on Seymour, ranking him No. 6 in the system and noting that his sinker helps neutralize lefties, potentially increasing his chances of sticking as a starter.

For now, Seymour is expected to provide the Giants with a fresh bullpen arm. With the team in the midst of a grueling 16-game stretch and Hjelle having pitched in each of the last three games, Seymour gives San Francisco a rested option as they push through their current schedule.
