Breaking: Boston Bruins Confirm In Talk To Sign Top Experienced Denfenseman In Free Agent To Bolster Rotation

**Veteran Defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk Remains on NHL Free-Agent Market**

As the NHL summer progresses, free agency has slowed down with many players taking short breaks or starting their training. Despite this lull, several seasoned NHL veterans remain available, including defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk, who has proven his worth as a depth player. Shattenkirk, a right-shot defenseman, delivered a solid performance with the Boston Bruins last season, playing on their third pairing and second power-play unit.

At 35, Shattenkirk has shown no signs of considering retirement. He has been training alongside Trevor Zegras and Matt Rempe in preparation for the 2024 Shoulder Check Charity game. Shattenkirk transitioned smoothly from a leading role with the Anaheim Ducks to a secondary role with the Bruins, where he averaged 15:47 ice time over 61 games. Despite the reduced minutes, he recorded six goals and 24 points, just shy of his previous season’s totals, with 11 points coming on the power play.

His stint with Boston demonstrated that Shattenkirk still has much to offer, even if his role has shifted to a depth position. He was capable of playing upwards of 20 minutes a night with the Ducks until recently. Despite the Ducks’ defensive struggles, Shattenkirk stood out, ranking second among Anaheim’s defensemen in scoring and showing solid defensive metrics.

Over his 14-year NHL career, Shattenkirk has proven to be a versatile and valuable defenseman. Drafted 14th overall in 2007 by the Colorado Avalanche, he began his career with a strong debut but was traded to the St. Louis Blues, where he developed his game under coach Ken Hitchcock. Known for his offensive skills and now enhanced by his defensive capabilities, Shattenkirk remains a reliable player for special teams and two-way play.

His recent contract with Boston was valued at just $1 million, and he is likely to command a similar or slightly lower amount in his next deal. Shattenkirk’s experience, two-way play, and special teams potential make him a worthwhile addition for any team looking to bolster their defense. Heading into the 2024-25 season, Shattenkirk is close to reaching career milestones, needing just 16 points for 500 and 48 games for 1,000.
