**Trade Proposal Sees Red Wings Targeting Maple Leafs Star **
Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner, who is entering the final year of his six-year, $65.4 million contract, has been linked to various trade rumors. A recent proposal suggests a blockbuster trade that would send Marner to the Detroit Red Wings.
The proposed deal would see the Red Wings acquire Marner, while the Maple Leafs would receive:
– Lucas Raymond
– Jonatan Berggren
– William Wallinder
– A second-round pick in 2025
This potential trade would be a major move for both teams. For Detroit, acquiring Marner would bring a high-caliber forward to boost their young core and enhance their playoff chances. Toronto, on the other hand, would gain a promising young talent in Raymond, who was drafted fourth overall by the Red Wings in 2020. However, Raymond is a restricted free agent (RFA) and has yet to finalize a contract extension.
In addition to Raymond, Toronto would receive Berggren, a 24-year-old who could be a bottom-six forward, and Wallinder, a defenseman drafted in the second round in 2020, expected to be a second or third-pairing NHL player. The deal also includes a second-round pick to complete the trade for Marner. To make this trade feasible, the Red Wings would likely need Marner to agree to a contract extension to ensure his long-term commitment.
Concerns Over Raymond’s Contract Status
The Red Wings have yet to sign RFA Raymond, which has caused some concern among fans. However, Red Wings head coach Derek Lalonde remains optimistic. “I’m not worried,” Lalonde said, referring to his past experiences with RFAs. “It’s all part of the process.”
Last season, Raymond had a standout year, scoring 31 goals and adding 41 assists for 72 points in 82 games. Lalonde noted Raymond’s impressive development, attributing it to both maturity and physical growth.
Marner’s Future in Toronto
Marner, drafted by the Maple Leafs as the fourth overall pick in 2015, has expressed a desire to remain with his hometown team. “That’d be a goal,” Marner said. “I’ve expressed my love for this place, this city. We’ll start thinking about that now and trying to figure something out… It means the world to me.”
Last season, Marner recorded 26 goals and 59 assists for 85 points in 69 games.
