The Miami Dolphins have started trimming their roster, releasing quarterback Mike White and tight end Jody Fortson ahead of the deadline to reduce their squad from 90 to 53 players by Tuesday. This news was reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter and NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

Neither release comes as a shock. White was competing with Skylar Thompson for the backup quarterback role behind Tua Tagovailoa. However, the competition effectively ended after Thompson’s strong performance in the Dolphins’ preseason finale on Friday.

Additionally, cutting White will save the Dolphins $3.5 million, making his release financially beneficial.

Jody Fortson, who joined the Dolphins earlier this year after five seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs, struggled to make an impact in Miami. He ended the preseason with just two receptions.
