In the first few weeks of the NFL season, injuries along the offensive line have ambushed the Pittsburgh Steelers. Right guard James Daniels suffered an Achilles tear during Sunday’s 27-24 loss to the Indianapolis Colts, adding to the team’s problems. Before he collapsed, Daniels was enjoying his finest football play of his career, creating a rift inside the team. Mason McCormick, a rookie guard who filled in at left guard in Week 4, will take his position.
But every injury calls for the next man to stand up, and the Steelers’ depth has already been put to the test. Both centre Nate Herbig and rookie right tackle Troy Fautanu are out for the season. This season, left guard Isaac Seumalo has not appeared on the pitch, and Dylan Cook, a tackle, has been out due to injury in recent weeks. In order to bolster their position, Pittsburgh signed guard Max Scharping on Tuesday.

Scharping won’t be called upon to take over right away. McCormick will slot in at right guard, while Spencer Anderson, who struggled there early in the season, will play left guard. The Steelers still need to get better in the trenches. For an offence whose potent running game is meant to be its centrepiece, the current state of affairs is unsustainable. If receiver assistance is delayed, the offensive line has to make up the difference. Maintaining the most recent updates for as many players as possible is crucial, especially considering how often Pittsburgh has been injured thus far.
“It’s really (to) get onboarded as quickly as possible,” he said. “Just get to know the guys and pick up the offence as soon as you can. When you’re an offensive lineman and you have to deal with four other people, trust is obviously very important.” Scharping has played guard for the most of his professional life. He also saw twelve snaps at centre for the Cincinnati Bengals in the previous season. He played 149 plays at left tackle during the Philadelphia Eagles’ preseason.
