Texas football and head coach Steve Sarkisian have improved the roster in key need areas on both sides of the ball over the last few offseasons by carefully selecting players via the NCAA Transfer Portal. However, Sarkisian’s signings to Texas via the transfer portal have also resulted in a significant number of roster losses.
Last offseason, Texas made nearly double the number of additions from the transfer portal to help upgrade the roster in particular areas of need for specific position groups compared to the year before.
During the 2024 offseason, Sarkisian and the Longhorns staff added ten or more players from the portal, including senior wide receiver Silas Bolden, junior wide receiver Isaiah Bond, and senior safety Andrew Mukuba. This season, about 20% of Texas’s starting lineup originated from the transfer portal. Sarkisian and the Longhorns have adapted remarkably well to the transfer portal and NIL in the modern era of collegiate football. Texas continues to prioritise high school recruitment over using the portal to fill out the entire roster. However, the Longhorns continue to use the portal effectively to make the necessary personnel upgrades.
Texas was likely to lose some players to the transfer portal with all the acquisitions the Longhorns made from the portal during the previous offseason, including another nationally ranked recruiting class for the 2024 cycle.
