The Dallas Cowboys are being urged to consider a trade for Arizona Cardinals safety Budda Baker, a three-time All-Pro, to address their struggling secondary after the first five games of the 2024 NFL season. Despite the Cowboys’ thrilling 20-17 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers, where Dak Prescott threw a game-winning touchdown to Jalen Tolbert with just 20 seconds remaining, concerns about their defense persist. Prescott threw for 352 yards but had two interceptions and a fumble, which highlighted the team’s vulnerabilities.
The Cowboys’ safety play has been a weak spot, with both Donovan Wilson and Malik Hooker receiving low grades from Pro Football Focus through the first few weeks. Bleacher Report’s NFL scouting department suggested that Dallas should target Baker, a standout defensive player who could strengthen the Cowboys’ defense.
Baker, who requested a trade in April 2023 due to dissatisfaction with his contract, remains a potential trade chip. Although he was granted a raise for the 2023 season, his long-term future with the Cardinals is uncertain. Baker, drafted 36th overall in 2017, has been a dominant force, recording 111 tackles in the 2022 season, along with one forced fumble, two interceptions, and seven pass deflections.
Acquiring Baker could provide the Cowboys with a significant upgrade, but it would come at a steep price. Arizona could demand premium draft capital in return for the star safety. As the trade deadline approaches, Dallas may need to weigh the cost of bolstering their defense with one of the NFL’s top talents.
