The Houston Texans are signing quarterback Davis Mills to a one-year contract extension valued at $5 million. This deal secures Mills as a key part of the Texans’ quarterback depth chart alongside their starting QB, C.J. Stroud, through the 2025 season.
In the 2024 preseason, Mills showcased his abilities by completing 70% of his passes, accumulating 191 yards, and throwing one touchdown without any turnovers across two games. This performance highlights his reliability as a backup and his potential to contribute effectively when needed.
Mills, who is 25 years old, was selected in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft out of Stanford. During his first two seasons with Houston, he started in 26 games, compiling a 5-20-1 record as a starter.
Over that span, Mills threw for 5,802 yards, connecting for 33 touchdowns but also recording 25 interceptions. Despite these mixed results, the Texans see value in retaining Mills as a dependable backup to Stroud, particularly given his experience and familiarity with the team’s system.
This extension reflects the Texans’ commitment to maintaining stability in their quarterback room, ensuring they have a reliable option behind Stroud. Mills’ performance and experience make him a valuable asset as the team continues to develop Stroud as their long-term starting quarterback.
