The Cleveland Browns have signed veteran tight end Geoff Swaim to their practice squad after a disappointing Week 1 performance against the Dallas Cowboys. The Browns, who were hopeful for a strong season, struggled offensively in their opener, falling short against one of the league’s top teams. The Cowboys, led by star linebacker Micah Parsons, easily handled Deshaun Watson and the Browns at Huntington Bank Stadium, raising concerns about Cleveland’s offensive capability this season.
Watson’s performance was underwhelming, as he passed for only 169 yards in the game, continuing the struggles that plagued him during his limited appearances last season. The Cowboys’ defense, particularly Parsons, proved too much for the Browns’ offense to handle, and Watson’s performance suggested that Cleveland might face ongoing offensive issues.
One of the few bright spots for the Browns was tight end David Njoku, who emerged as Watson’s top target. Njoku caught four passes for 44 yards, but he sustained an ankle injury during the game, leaving his status uncertain and day-to-day moving forward. With Njoku’s availability in question, the Browns made the decision to bolster their depth at tight end by signing Geoff Swaim to their practice squad, as reported by ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.
Swaim, a veteran presence, is expected to provide depth and potentially step into a larger role if Njoku is sidelined. The Browns had high hopes for their offense this season, with wide receiver Amari Cooper returning healthy and the addition of former Denver Broncos wideout Jerry Jeudy. Jeudy made an immediate impact in Week 1, catching his first touchdown pass with the Browns.
Despite these offensive weapons, the loss of Njoku and the ongoing recovery of star running back Nick Chubb leave the future of Cleveland’s offense uncertain. Chubb, who is still on the mend, remains a key part of their game plan, and his absence only adds to the team’s challenges. As the season progresses, it remains to be seen whether the Browns can overcome these obstacles and find consistency on offense. The addition of Swaim provides insurance, but Cleveland will need more from Watson and their other offensive weapons to turn things around.
