Good News: Just In New York Rangers Officially Announced The Signing Of Another Top Experienced Superstar

The New York Rangers have invited forward Adam Erne to their training camp on a professional tryout (PTO) agreement, as reported by TSN’s Darren Dreger. Erne, a native of New Haven, Connecticut, spent last season with the Edmonton Oilers organization, playing both in the NHL and for their American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Bakersfield Condors. He earned a one-year contract with Edmonton after joining their camp on a similar PTO.

During the 2022-23 season, Erne appeared in 24 NHL games for the Oilers, recording one goal and one assist. His lone goal came against the New Jersey Devils on December 21. In the AHL, he played 36 games for the Condors, tallying six goals and six assists. He also participated in two Calder Cup Playoff games with Bakersfield last spring.

Erne’s career has taken him across three NHL teams. Drafted in the second round, 33rd overall, by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 2013 NHL Draft, he spent significant time with their AHL affiliate, the Syracuse Crunch, before earning a full-time spot in the NHL. He was traded to the Detroit Red Wings in August 2019, where he played for four seasons. Erne became a free agent following the 2022-23 season after being left unsigned by Detroit.

Over the course of his career, Erne has played in 379 NHL games, recording 43 goals and 50 assists. However, his playoff experience is limited to just three Stanley Cup Playoff games, all of which came during the Lightning’s first-round sweep by the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2019.

As the Rangers head into training camp, it remains to be seen where Erne could fit on their roster. The team already has depth at the winger position, with players like Will Cuylle, Jimmy Vesey, and Matt Rempe under contract. Additionally, the Rangers are limited by salary cap space, with only around $700,000 available and 46 of the maximum 50 contracts already in place, according to CapWages.

Erne’s presence at training camp will provide the Rangers with another option for their lineup, though competition will be fierce given the team’s current depth and financial constraints.
