Official Yankees News: Yankees have a serious problem at shortstop

The New York Yankees may be playing better baseball recently, winning seven of their last 10 games, but they still face a significant issue at shortstop. While the bullpen is improving, the starters are keeping the team competitive, and the lineup is regaining strength with players returning from injury, shortstop remains a glaring problem.

Anthony Volpe, the Yankees’ starting shortstop, has been excellent defensively, displaying Gold Glove-caliber skills. However, his offense has been severely lacking for months. Since June 1, Volpe has been one of the least productive regulars in the league, as pointed out by Yankees insider Chris Kirschner. Despite improvements in other positions—catcher, second base, third base, and left field—shortstop has become a major weakness in the lineup.

Volpe’s offensive numbers have been disappointing, hitting just .223/.255/.330 with a .584 OPS in 385 plate appearances. In 91 games since June 1, he has hit only five home runs, and his power and ability to drive the ball have significantly declined. His struggles to get on base have compounded his offensive issues, making him a liability at the plate.

The Yankees are relying on Volpe’s potential, defensive skills, and speed to keep him in the everyday lineup, but they need more from him if they hope to make a deep playoff run. It’s unlikely that he will be benched, as there aren’t many viable alternatives, but the lack of offensive growth from last season is frustrating. In 2023, Volpe posted a .666 OPS, but this year he has already regressed to a .664 OPS, showing little improvement.

The Yankees’ shortstop problem is a serious concern, and without offensive progress from Volpe, it could hinder their postseason aspirations.
