Dan Neil, the midfielder, will miss tomorrow’s trip to Stoke City in order to get some extra rest before the midweek game against Leicester City.
According to Sunderland manager Tony Mowbray, Dan Neil’s forced absence this weekend could be a gift in disguise for the midfielder – and for the club. Neil will miss tomorrow’s game against Stoke City due to suspension for his controversial red card against Middlesbrough on Wearside before to the international break.
Neil has become an automatic starter in the middle of the field for Sunderland this season, appearing in every Championship game up until his dismissal against Boro. While Mowbray would prefer to have the 21-year-old available at the bet365 Stadium, the fact that Neil will have an extra few days’ rest may be beneficial in the long run as Sunderland prepare for a tough outing at league leaders Leicester City on Tuesday night, before Norwich City visit the Stadium of Light the following weekend.
“I think he’s looking forward to a rest,” said Mowbray. “It’s good for him because it is a three-game week and it is good sometimes for a young player to put his feet up, enjoy and watch the football, ready for three days later when he is going to be needed [against Leicester], so that’s not going to be an issue for us.”
