“I Will Leave For Him To Play” More Bad News For Packers As Fans Most Loved Superstar Officially Departs Green Bay Packers Today

The Green Bay Packers have released long snapper Matt Orzech following his low snap that almost cost them a game-winning field goal in Week 7’s victory over the Houston Texans. However, the move seems procedural rather than punitive.

According to the Packers’ transaction wire from October 21, the team cut Orzech and activated defensive lineman Jonathan Ford from injured reserve. Orzech’s low snap to punter/holder Dan Whelan during Brandon McManus’ 45-yard game-winning field goal created a tense moment, though Whelan managed to recover it in time for McManus to secure the 24-22 win. Despite this mistake, Sports Illustrated’s Bill Huber reports that Orzech’s release was not a direct response to the low snap. Instead, it was related to making room for Ford’s return to the 53-man roster after his practice window had closed.

The Packers are expected to re-sign Orzech and place Ford back on the practice squad if he clears waivers. However, no official moves had been made as of Tuesday, October 22.

Jonathan Ford, a 2022 seventh-round pick, showed promise in the 2024 training camp but was sidelined with a calf injury in the preseason finale. With Devonte Wyatt, the team’s starting defensive tackle, still out due to a foot injury, Ford could contribute immediately to the Packers’ defensive line rotation in Week 8 against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Additionally, the Packers released fullback Andrew Beck from their practice squad after elevating him for three games this season. Beck, who played 15 offensive snaps and 22 special teams snaps, would have needed to be signed to the active roster for further play, but the team opted not to retain him. As a result, the Packers have an open practice squad spot heading into Week 8.
