Kasimir Kaskisuo has signed a professional tryout (PTO) agreement with the Boston Bruins, as reported by Joe Haggerty of the Boston Sports Journal. The 30-year-old goaltender, who last played in the NHL during the 2020-21 season, is getting another chance to prove himself at the highest level. In his last NHL appearance, Kaskisuo came off the bench to replace Pekka Rinne during a game in which the Nashville Predators suffered a 5-1 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes. He managed to stop all three shots he faced during his brief time in net.
Since that time, Kaskisuo has spent most of his time in the American Hockey League (AHL). Last season, he played for the Laval Rocket, where he posted a record of seven wins and four losses. His performance included a 2.90 goals-against average (GAA) and a respectable .909 save percentage, showing he still has the ability to be a solid presence in goal.
The Bruins are looking to bolster their goaltending options with Kaskisuo’s PTO, especially as one of their key goaltenders, Jeremy Swayman, remains a restricted free agent and has yet to join the team for training camp. With Swayman’s future still uncertain, Kaskisuo’s signing could help provide the team with some much-needed depth at the goalie position, offering a potential backup or insurance option if the contract situation with Swayman drags on.
Kaskisuo’s journey reflects the challenging nature of maintaining a career as a backup goaltender in professional hockey, but his solid AHL numbers and prior NHL experience offer hope that he might find a place with the Bruins. His signing adds another storyline to Boston’s offseason, as the team prepares for the upcoming season and addresses its roster needs.
The move also suggests that the Bruins are considering all available options to ensure they have the necessary depth in net, especially in the event of injuries or unresolved contract negotiations. Kaskisuo will now have the opportunity to compete for a spot and potentially extend his career in the NHL.
