After five years in charge, Oilers general manager Ken Holland was fired this offseason, and Elliotte Friedman, an insider, has now alluded to a significant new position. When Ken Holland took over in 2019, the Edmonton Oilers seemed poised to challenge for the Stanley Cup for years to come. However, after five years and only one Stanley Cup Finals appearance, the team let him go this past summer when his contract expired.
There have been hints that the four-time Stanley Cup winning General Manager would find a new role with a team, but after nothing eventuated, it appears he will be going in a different direction.
Top Insider Elliotte Friedman claims that Holland may switch to a different position with the NHL because NHL Hockey Operations has reportedly contacted him and expressed interest in a possible position with the league. This might mean many different things to the 68-year-old given the variety of NHL responsibilities, but after working as a general manager for the most of the previous 28 years, he might be up for a new challenge. Holland used to be one of the best hockey minds in the world, helping to create a dynasty with the Detroit Red Wings. However, after failing to lead the Edmonton Oilers to the Stanley Cup with a pre-made squad in place, that has now come into question.
We will learn more about Holland’s potential role with the league in the coming weeks and months if he is unable to find a role with the league, and while plenty of fans harbour bad feelings for him for the lack of success, there’s absolutely no doubting that he could be an asset for the NHL if used in the correct role.
