Sad News: Chicago Cubs Confirm The Departure Of Another Top Veteran After Rejecting Minor League Assignment

Christian Bethancourt has opted for free agency after being removed from the Chicago Cubs’ 40-man roster, as reported by Maddie Lee of the *Chicago Sun-Times*. Rather than accepting an outright assignment, Bethancourt chose to explore his options on the open market. The 2024 season saw mixed results for Bethancourt; he posted a strong .814 OPS over 24 games with the Cubs, demonstrating his potential with a solid close to the season.

However, his performance with the Miami Marlins earlier in the year was less impressive, managing just a .466 OPS across 38 games before joining the Cubs.

Bethancourt’s decision to enter free agency gives him a chance to capitalize on his late-season improvements and potentially secure a roster spot with another team. Known for his flexibility as a catcher who can also play first base, Bethancourt’s experience and recent surge in performance may make him an appealing option for teams in need of depth in those positions. Now in free agency, he will seek to build on his late-season success as he evaluates new opportunities for the upcoming season.
