Minnesota Vikings Officially Reached Agreement To Sign Another Top Veteran RB To Replace Aaron Jones Replacement

The Minnesota Vikings may face significant changes at key positions next season, with quarterback Sam Darnold and running back Aaron Jones both heading toward free agency. Darnold, who rejuvenated his career with the Vikings, will enter free agency at age 28 after his best season yet. However, his potential salary demands may not align with the Vikings’ plans, especially with rookie J.J. McCarthy poised to take over in 2025 following recovery from a knee injury.

Meanwhile, Jones, who signed a one-year, $7 million deal, will turn 30 soon, making his long-term future with the team uncertain. While the Vikings appear set at quarterback and skill positions with stars like Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, and T.J. Hockenson, both the offensive line and secondary remain areas of need. Nevertheless, recent trends in the NFL, as demonstrated by teams like the Baltimore Ravens and Philadelphia Eagles, show the value of investing in running backs.

On November 18, *Bleacher Report’s* NFL Scouting Department recommended that the Vikings target Boise State’s Ashton Jeanty, a collegiate superstar and Heisman Trophy contender, in the 2025 draft. Jeanty’s remarkable season includes 1,893 rushing yards, 26 touchdowns, and 17 receptions for 98 yards and another score through 10 games. The report highlighted Jeanty’s potential to provide McCarthy with strong support, setting the rookie quarterback up for success.

Though selecting a running back in the first round is often debated, Jeanty’s upside is undeniable. Comparisons have been made to Bijan Robinson, who was selected eighth overall by the Atlanta Falcons in 2023. Robinson’s success, alongside productive seasons from other high-profile running backs like Derrick Henry and Saquon Barkley, demonstrates the potential payoff of such investments. All three players have contributed significantly to their teams’ playoff runs in 2024, with the Eagles, Falcons, and Ravens reaping the rewards of prioritizing elite talent at the position.

For the Vikings, Jeanty represents a younger, cost-effective option compared to Jones. While other needs exist, the Boise State standout offers an opportunity to secure a dynamic running back for the long term. If the Vikings choose to prioritize the position, Jeanty could become a cornerstone of their offense, providing immediate and sustained value.
