FanSided’s Nick Villano recently speculated on the destinations of this offseason’s top 20 MLB free agents, projecting that Bregman might sign with the Detroit Tigers instead of re-signing with the Astros. Villano highlighted the Tigers’ postseason progress as a compelling factor. “They ended up winning enough games to make the playoffs, and they even made it to Game 5 of the ALDS after sweeping the Astros in the Wild Card round,” Villano wrote. “Bregman picking the Tigers is him betting on the youth of this team to be the next version of the Astros. He could be the star as the rest of the team develops further.”
For Detroit to successfully acquire Bregman, they would need to outbid not only the Astros but also other potential suitors significantly. Although Bregman might consider giving Houston a hometown discount, there is a risk the Astros could lose him if they prioritize other free agents this offseason.
Bregman’s departure would mark a significant shift for the Astros. Since joining the team, he has been a pivotal player, contributing to their sustained success. However, the Tigers represent an appealing option, as their young core shows promise for future contention.
