Word got out over the weekend that Steven Nelson, a former cornerback for the Kansas City Chiefs, would be stopping by the team on Monday. During his Zoom press conference on Monday afternoon, head coach Andy Reid sounded upbeat about the encounter. Regarding Nelson, Reid remarked, “He was a good player when he was here.” “He had a good career for the last how many years after graduating from Oregon State with the ability to return and play corner. He then went on to become a starting corner in the league.” The 31-year-old was chosen by Kansas City in the third round of the 2015 NFL Draft. Nelson was a member of the squad till 2018. Before retiring this past June, he made trips in Pittsburgh (2019–20), Philadelphia (2021), and Houston (2022–23).
The Kansas City Chiefs have officially added cornerback Steven Nelson to their practice squad. This move comes as part of the team’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its defensive depth. Nelson, who has extensive experience in the NFL, was a standout player for the Chiefs in previous seasons. He spent the first four years of his career with Kansas City before moving on to play for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Nelson was drafted by the Chiefs in the third round of the 2015 NFL Draft and quickly became a key part of their defense. Over his four seasons in Kansas City, he earned a reputation as a reliable and skilled cornerback, contributing significantly to the team’s secondary. After his time with the Chiefs, Nelson signed a free-agent contract with the Steelers in 2019, where he played for several seasons and continued to solidify his standing as a talented cornerback in the league.
Although Nelson has yet to be re-signed to an active roster for the 2024 season, his signing to the Chiefs’ practice squad signals that the team sees value in his experience and skill set. He is expected to bring leadership and depth to the cornerback position, providing a veteran presence to the young players on the team. By adding Nelson to the practice squad, the Chiefs have increased their options for both short- and long-term roster decisions.
This move also allows the Chiefs to evaluate Nelson’s fitness and readiness to rejoin the active roster if needed. While there is no immediate indication that he will be called up, his presence on the practice squad keeps him in the fold for potential future contributions. Nelson’s familiarity with the Chiefs’ system could prove valuable if he is needed to step up during the season due to injuries or other roster changes.
Overall, this signing demonstrates the Chiefs’ commitment to bolstering their defense and providing additional resources to their coaching staff as they prepare for the remainder of the season.
