Many of the young players who had hoped to make an impact on the next season haven’t been able to because of the Whites’ exceptional attacking depth in the summer.
Sam Greenwood moved to Middlesbrough for the season, but not many were able to gain loan departures from Elland Road.
How is things going for Greenwood?
Under Michael Carrick, Middlesbrough had a difficult start to the season, going winless in their opening seven games. However, they have since turned that around, going on six straight victories.
Their most recent being away to Norwich City, where they further tormented the Canaries after Leeds defeated them on Saturday after rallying from a 2-0 deficit.
Teesside Live gave Greenwood an 8 out of 10, writing the following about his performance:
He scored what appeared to be the lone goal until dramatic stoppage time, and he remained lively and insightful the entire way. The amount of work Greenwood put in for his team in this one, backing Engel all the way down that left, should not be overlooked, though, in addition to the goal.
Has Leeds erred in some way?
August proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that Greenwood had to go out on loan, as he was proving to be little more than a corner delivery man who could start for Leeds in the league.
Therefore, there shouldn’t be any concerns that he’s moving to Middlesbrough. The problem for Leeds, though, is that The Athletic just disclosed that the attacker has an option to buy in his loan agreement, valued at £1.5 million—the same amount Leeds paid to get him from Arsenal in 2020.
Even though a permanent option was the best choice for Leeds, it appears naive to believe that, after 25 Premier League appearances with one goal and four assists, the club wasn’t even concerned about turning a profit on the sum they spent three years ago.
At just 21, he has ample potential to develop with the proper coach. We should have anticipated Carrick’s interest in him and accordingly priced him accordingly.
