Callum Wilson’s double strike, which secured a draw for Newcastle United against Wolverhampton Wanderers, propelled him to the third spot on the club’s historical Premier League top goal scorers list. The Newcastle United forward, Callum Wilson, expressed his belief that the match officials were correct in awarding him a penalty during the 2-2 draw with Wolves on Saturday evening.
Twice during the game, Wilson put the Magpies in the lead at Molineux, but the home team managed to equalize each time, with goals from Mario Lemina and Hee-Chan Hwang. This extended Newcastle’s unbeaten run in the Premier League to six matches, although it was not without controversy.
Shortly before halftime, Fabian Schar went down in the penalty box following a challenge by Hwang. Referee Anthony Taylor pointed to the penalty spot, and despite an extensive VAR review, the on-field decision was upheld. Wolves manager Gary O’Neil criticized the decision as “scandalous,” while Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe admitted it was “contentious.” However, Wilson was of the opinion that the correct decision had been made.
“In real-time, from my perspective, it appeared to be a penalty,” said Newcastle’s number 9. “Fabby kicked the ball, and the guy went through him, and in the end, they arrived at the correct decision.
“If it wasn’t a penalty, then I believe I was about to make a shot on goal as well. I suppose it was the right decision; they got it right, and the penalty was awarded. Then it was a matter of putting the ball in the back of the net.
“You try to stay professional and composed and not get too agitated. It felt like an eternity until the referee pointed to the penalty spot, but I stepped away and had a brief moment to myself to think about where to place it.
“My penalty technique wasn’t the best, but nevertheless, it ended up in the back of the net.”
On the whole, I’d say it was probably a fair result. The challenging conditions and circumstances made it difficult. At times, they made it tough for us, and when you go ahead twice, you expect to maintain the lead, so it was disappointing to leave with just one point.
Regarding the result, Wilson added: “When we were in their final third or any turnover, they quickly launched counter-attacks against us. It’s a long pitch to run back and recover from, so the defenders did a fantastic job of doing that.
We win and lose as a team, but as strikers, we also take pride in helping the defenders keep clean sheets. Unfortunately, we couldn’t do that today, but it’s something to work on. It ended 2-2, so we’ll take the point, focus on the positives, and move forward.
As a result of his two goals, Wilson climbed to the third position on Newcastle’s all-time Premier League top scorers chart, just one goal behind Peter Beardsley, who is in second place.
