Fabian Schar has been chastised for a controversial moment during Newcastle’s Saturday draw with Wolves.
Wilson’s second on the stroke of half-time put his side ahead, arguably against the run of play, after capitalising on a mistake by Jose Sa to acrobatically score for the opener. It also moved him ahead of Alexander Isak in the Premier League goalscoring standings.
Wilson now leads Isak by a single goal in the league, but the 31-year-old told the Gazette that he doesn’t feel like he’s in direct competition with his teammate to be the club’s top scorer this season.
“We’re a team, really,” Wilson added. Even if we play as individuals when needed, we are ultimately a striking department. We help one other, push each other, and the manager assists us in sharing our loads.
“Hopefully, we can both stay fit at the same time and take it game by game so that we can give 110% every time we play without getting tired.” We’re excited to have Alex back, and each striker that plays wants to score goals, and that’s all you can do.”
Wilson’s second goal at Molineux came from the penalty spot, and he is yet to miss a penalty for Newcastle. Wilson converted the spot-kick to restore Newcastle’s lead, despite having to wait for a lengthy VAR check.
Wilson’s ability to remain calm in the face of background noise was on display. When asked what he was thinking when he came up to the plate, Wilson replied, “Not a lot really.”
“I probably don’t think about the outcome, just where I’m going to put it and how I’m going to do it.” Fortunately, it went in.”
Wilson and his teammates will travel to Old Trafford to play Manchester United in the Carabao Cup, a rematch of last year’s final at Wembley. Meanwhile, Isak is expected to miss Newcastle’s next three games due to a recurrence of a groin ailment that forced him to withdraw from international action earlier this month.
