After the Tennessee Titans’ 20-16 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday night, head coach Mike Vrabel met with media and declined to select a full-time starting quarterback between youngster Will Levis and injured veteran Ryan Tannehill.
When questioned on Friday about whether he intends to designate Levis as his top quarterback, Vrabel responded, “No, I’m not prepared to make that decision at this time,” as reported by Jim Wyatt of the Titans’ official website. Vrabel suggested that they will discuss the depth chart in the coming weekend and will likely share a finalized depth chart or something similar during Tuesday’s media session. This will allow them to evaluate various factors, including Ryan’s health and other positions on the team.
Tannehill, who hasn’t taken the field since his ankle injury in Week 6 against the Baltimore Ravens just before the Titans’ bye week, is nearing the end of his contract and it’s unlikely he’ll be re-signed by the team in the upcoming offseason.
On the other hand, Levis, the 24-year-old quarterback selected as the 33rd overall pick in the recent draft, had an excellent performance in a 28-23 victory over the Atlanta Falcons last Sunday, completing 19 of 29 passes for 238 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions. However, he faced more challenges in the game against the Steelers, connecting on 22 of 39 pass attempts for 262 yards with no touchdowns and one interception at Acrisure Stadium.
According to Turron Davenport of ESPN, Levis managed to put up impressive statistics despite constant pressure, especially considering the national television/streaming audience.
“I’ll have a decision for you when Ryan is healthy,” Vrabel continued in his remarks.
After dropping to 3-5 on Thursday night, the Titans may have to adjust their expectations for their postseason prospects. Their first game will be at home against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (3-4) on November 12. Regarding Tennessee’s future after Week 18, it may be best for all parties to watch how Levis handles his first professional loss as a starter, even if Vrabel genuinely thinks Tannehill gives the team the best chance to win.
