Sunderland now leading championship side in a race to sign league one top strike

Leeds United has expressed interest in AFC Wimbledon striker Ali Al-Hamadi, who is also being monitored by Sunderland. Ali Al-Hamadi, a relatively unknown name to many Leeds United fans, has been making waves in League Two this season.

At 21 years old, Al-Hamadi’s professional career has primarily unfolded in the fourth tier of football. He initially struggled to make an impact at Swansea’s academy, which led to a move to Wycombe, but he faced challenges establishing himself as a regular in the starting lineup. After a loan spell in the National League, he joined Wimbledon in January 2022.

His decision to join Wimbledon has proven to be a wise one, as he has become a key player for the club, delivering impressive performances. Al-Hamadi scored ten goals in 19 games last season and has added four more in 14 appearances this season, bringing his total to 14 league goals in 33 appearances since joining Wimbledon. He’s not just a goal-scorer; he has also provided five assists this season, showcasing his versatility and development as a player.

Given his current form and potential for growth, it’s no surprise that higher-level Football League clubs have taken notice of Al-Hamadi. Sunderland has been keeping an eye on the Iraqi international, and now Leeds is considering a potential January transfer.

Wimbledon is reportedly looking for a fee of over £1.2 million for Al-Hamadi, which would be a modern-day record for the club. With Al-Hamadi approaching the final 18 months of his contract, the timing of a potential transfer in January would maximize his value.

While the appeal of joining Leeds is evident due to their status as a substantial club with Premier League aspirations, Al-Hamadi should also weigh the importance of securing regular playing time. Joining Leeds may mean starting with the under-23s or going out on loan. However, unexpected opportunities could arise due to injuries or impressive performances in training.

For now, Al-Hamadi remains focused on helping Wimbledon in their quest to climb the table and progress in the FA Cup, with a cup fixture against Cheltenham Town on the horizon.
