Newcastle investigating Tonali’s betting breaches, says Ashworth

“Sandro Tonali’s violation of betting rules regarding matches took Newcastle United by surprise, prompting an internal investigation by the Premier League club, according to sporting director Dan Ashworth. The 23-year-old Italian international received an 18-month ban from the Italian Football Federation, with eight months of the ban potentially converted to alternative treatment following an agreement with the Federal Prosecutor’s Office. FIFA also granted a request by the Italian federation to enforce the ban worldwide.

Tonali, who joined Newcastle from AC Milan in July for a reported 70 million euros (US$75 million), a record sum for an Italian player, will miss the remainder of the season and potentially the 2024 European Championship if Italy qualifies.

Ashworth expressed his shock and surprise at the situation, emphasizing Tonali’s humanity. He also questioned whether there were any signs or preventive measures that could have been taken. He mentioned the challenge of speculating on whether Milan was aware of the situation during the sale, and the club is primarily focused on its internal investigation and processes.

Tonali’s agent disclosed last month that the player was struggling with a gambling addiction. Ashworth mentioned that the England Football Association is informed about the situation, and the club is cooperating with any potential actions the FA may take.

Despite these developments, Newcastle is preparing for upcoming matches, including a fixture against Arsenal in the top-flight and a Champions League game against Borussia Dortmund. Ashworth also stated that the club plans to “welcome” Milan when they face them in the elite European club competition at St James’ Park in December.”
