Collingwood’s high-profile recruit, Lachie Schultz, has provided insights into his unexpected trade request away from Fremantle in favor of the Magpies. Schultz, who was still under contract with Fremantle for another season, made the surprising move to leave the Dockers in October, citing his strong connection to Victoria as the primary reason. The 25-year-old Victorian native began his professional career with the Dockers after playing for VFL team Williamstown. He expressed his excitement at the prospect of returning home to be with friends and family, including his partner Maddie, who is also from Victoria.
Schultz, who was drafted by Fremantle in 2018, emphasized the appeal of joining Collingwood, a club with a rich history and an incredibly passionate fan base. He recalled the atmosphere of the 2022 semi-final at the MCG where Collingwood faced Fremantle and the overwhelming support for the Magpies. Schultz looks forward to contributing to the team’s playing style and is eager to bring his own unique approach to the forward line in 2024. He highlighted the importance of pressure in his game and its role in setting up offensive opportunities.
In addition to Schultz’s arrival, Collingwood also saw the departure of Taylor Adams and Jack Ginnivan to the Sydney Swans and Hawthorn, respectively, during the October player movement period. The focus for Collingwood now shifts to the National Draft, where they hold the 19th pick in the first round. The draft will take place over two nights on November 20 and 21 at Marvel Stadium.
