Paul Merson has given the Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon high marks ahead of the Magpies’ next Premier League match.
The 22-year-old Newcastle star, according to the analyst, is “improving week on week” in an article on the Sky Sports website.
Eddie Howe’s work at St. James’ Park was also commended by Merson, along with a number of other Magpies players like Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak.
Since moving to Newcastle for £45 million at the beginning of the season, Gordon has been playing at an even higher level.
The Everton academy graduate was given the opportunity to acclimate to his new surroundings, as manager Howe prefers to do.
Gordon made 16 appearances for Newcastle last season, 12 of which were off the bench. He then went on to shine for England’s Under-21s in their triumphant European championship campaign.
This season, Gordon is showing everyone what he’s capable of. He has 14 outings under his belt, of which nine have come in the Premier League.
In the top division, he contributes two goals and three goals in 2023–24, which helps Newcastle move up the table to sixth place.
“You don’t speak highly enough.”
Merson adores what he’s been witnessing from Gordon and all of the Magpies’ associates.
“The club has done everything right so far, from top to bottom,” he wrote.
“To upset the apple cart, the new owners haven’t just walked in and started buying superstar after superstar. They have acquired elite athletes such as Alexander Isak and Bruno Guimaraes.
Not many players have entered the game and failed. Week by week, Anthony Gordon is also getting better.
“They could have been careless and simply squandered a ton of cash on elite players, bringing in £100 million or £120 million players with the resources they have.”
They didn’t, and they have since looked at players to fit their preferred style of play. Speaking positively about the club’s recruitment is impossible, and that cannot be said of every Premier League team.
Again, you can’t say that about every manager in the top tier. However, Howe also develops players. During his tenure at Newcastle, he has been exceptional.
Gordon is a wise choice for Newcastle.
After a difficult conclusion to his Everton career, it’s wonderful to see Gordon reaching his full potential. There is undoubtedly a player there, and Howe is making the most of him.
Howe accomplishes this. He guides them to the next level after assisting them in settling into their new environment rather than tossing them in at the deep end.
One of Newcastle’s many excellent additions is Gordon, and it will be interesting to watch how his career unfolds.
