Auburn quarterback Ashton Daniels has decided to enter the transfer portal when it opens next month, further reshaping an already uncertain quarterback situation under new head coach Alex Golesh.
Daniels revealed his decision Sunday on social media after starting three games for the Tigers during the 2025 season. The former Stanford transfer maintained his redshirt eligibility by sitting out one game, but will finish his college career at another program.
“I promised a return to this amazing place, but things didn’t work out how I thought they would,” Daniels shared on Instagram.
His exit follows Jackson Arnold’s plan to enter the portal, leaving Auburn with only one scholarship quarterback remaining: redshirt freshman Deuce Knight, a former five-star, top-50 national recruit. With depth now thin, Golesh and his staff are expected to aggressively pursue quarterback options in the transfer market.
The transfer portal will be open from Jan. 2 to Jan. 16 after the NCAA removed the spring window, adding urgency for teams still searching for help at the position.
Daniels took over as Auburn’s starter during a win over Arkansas and later started against Kentucky, Vanderbilt and Alabama. After Hugh Freeze was dismissed, he totaled more than 400 yards of offense and four touchdowns in an overtime loss to Vanderbilt.
On the year, Daniels passed for 797 yards and three touchdowns while adding 280 rushing yards and two scores on the ground.
A dual-threat quarterback, Daniels previously amassed over 5,000 total yards at Stanford. His standout performance at Auburn came against Vanderbilt in early November, when he recorded more than 400 yards of total offense and four touchdowns in a thrilling overtime loss.

Though he showed glimpses of his upside as a full-time starter, Daniels will now seek to prove himself at a new program in 2026.
