New LSU head coach Lane Kiffin faces a major task in finding his starting quarterback for the 2026 season. With Garrett Nussmeier expected to depart, the Tigers are widely anticipated to be aggressive players in the transfer portal this offseason.
One familiar name to watch is Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss, who has a prior connection to Kiffin. However, Chambliss’ situation is complicated, as his eligibility for a sixth season remains uncertain. It’s also unclear whether he would choose to follow Kiffin to LSU, remain at Ole Miss, or explore other options should the NCAA approve another year of eligibility.
Another quarterback emerging as a potential target is Florida’s DJ Lagway. According to ESPN’s Matt Moscona, LSU has already reached out to representatives for the Gators’ signal-caller. “Quick tidbit: source confirms LSU has made contact with DJ Lagway’s reps,” Moscona reported, adding that LSU’s need at quarterback makes it likely the program will pursue every realistic portal option.
Lagway posted mixed results during his time at Florida. In 2024, he threw for 1,915 yards with 12 touchdowns and nine interceptions, while also rushing for 101 yards. This past season, the sophomore improved his passing numbers to 2,264 yards and 16 touchdowns but also threw 14 interceptions. He added 136 rushing yards and a touchdown for a Florida team that finished 4–8.
On December 15, Lagway announced he would officially enter the transfer portal on January 2, following Florida’s hiring of former Tulane head coach Jon Sumrall. In a statement shared on Instagram, Lagway expressed gratitude to the program before explaining that, after careful consideration, he had decided to explore new opportunities.
Widely viewed as one of the top quarterback prospects in the portal this offseason, Lagway is expected to draw significant interest. Former Florida head coach Steve Spurrier has even floated Baylor as a potential landing spot for the Willis, Texas native.
