Sean McVay now comments on Carson Wentz future with Rams

“… but I think to have somebody that’s played as well as he’s played, has had as many experiences as he’s had to be out there and available is kind of rare.”

Last week, the Los Angeles Rams made headlines by signing quarterback Carson Wentz, a move that elicited a variety of reactions. Regarding Wentz’s future with the team, Rams head coach Sean McVay emphasized the uncertainty.

“I think that’s to be determined,” McVay told reporters when questioned about his plans for Wentz beyond the current season. He explained that the decision to bring Wentz on board was primarily driven by the team’s excitement about acquiring him and addressing a specific need. McVay expressed enthusiasm about the return of Matthew Stafford but highlighted Wentz’s impressive track record and wealth of experience as factors that made him an attractive addition.

While the Rams secured Wentz, they faced competition from other teams, including the New York Jets. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Jets had explored the possibility of signing the 2017 Pro Bowler, particularly after losing Aaron Rodgers to a torn Achilles in Week 1.

McVay clarified that Wentz’s addition to the Rams was intended to enhance the quarterback depth chart. In the event that Stafford becomes unavailable, the move provides a contingency plan with a quarterback of Wentz’s caliber. McVay stressed the importance of upgrading the quarterback room and ensuring that someone with extensive experience in high-level football is familiar with the team’s strategies.

Summing up the decision, McVay stated, “I think it’s really just a chance to upgrade the quarterback room. God forbid if something were to happen where [Stafford] wasn’t available, felt like this would offer an opportunity for somebody that’s played a lot of high-level football to get him in here, get him kind of familiar with some of the things that we’re doing. That’s what went into the decision.”
