Newcastle United star now drops future hint ahead of major contract decision

The defender is one of numerous Newcastle United players whose contracts at St. James Park are about to expire.
As he approaches the last six months of his current contract at St James Park, Emil Krafth has been candid about his future at Newcastle United.

The Sweden international became a member of the Magpies in the summer of 2019 and is among several players who have significantly improved since Eddie Howe took over as manager during the past two years.
Following a standout season in which he helped the Magpies escape the relegation zone and finish in the middle of the table in 2021–2022, Krafth had high expectations for capitalizing on that success in 2022–2023.

Nevertheless, an unfortunate ACL injury during a Carabao Cup victory against Tranmere Rovers in the opening month of the season forced Krafth to remain on the sidelines for more than a year. The former Amiens and Bologna player, however, made a remarkable comeback when he partnered with Paul Dummett to form a solid Magpies defense that played a crucial role in the surprising 3-0 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford earlier this month.

Making his return to the Premier League, Krafth appeared as a late substitute in the 2-0 defeat against Bournemouth last Saturday. To add to the unexpected turn of events, he was surprisingly called up to the Sweden squad for a Euro 2024 doubleheader this week.

When questioned about his future on Tyneside during the international break, the Magpies defender said he “would love to stay” at Newcastle but that his main goal is still getting back to full fitness as soon as possible.

“I haven’t reflected on it that much because my focus has been on coming back and playing football,” he said to FootballSkanalen. Then you have to accept things as they happen.

It is evident that you don’t speak very much. I don’t give it much attention. All I want is to return and resume playing football. You have to accept what occurs when it occurs. Here in Newcastle, we’re having a great time.

“I haven’t given it much thought yet. The club hasn’t made any signals yet, so it kind of depends on what they want and signal. Let’s see. My family and I are big fans of Newcastle, so we have no problem staying. We wish we could remain.

When Sweden plays Azerbaijan and Estonia in their last Euro 2024 qualification round next week, Krafth could add to his 42 caps for his country.
