Chiefs now ready to Poach $11.8 Million Raiders Star With ‘Value Contract’

The past negotiations for a new contract did not go smoothly for Raiders running back Josh Jacobs, as he engaged in a holdout this summer, seeking an improved deal after leading the NFL in rushing yardage. The standoff ended with Jacobs accepting a one-year contract, providing only a modest increase to $11.8 million.

As the offseason approaches, Jacobs is poised to seek a substantial long-term contract once again. Spotrac estimates his market value at over $10 million per year, projecting a four-year deal worth $43 million. However, the Raiders’ leverage may be stronger this time due to Jacobs’ decreased output.

The twist in the tale lies in the potential involvement of other teams. Spotrac’s contract expert, Mike Ginnitti, suggests that a team to watch in the pursuit of Jacobs next offseason is the Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs, under the guidance of Coach Andy Reid, could see value in acquiring a versatile back like Jacobs to enhance their offense.

Ginnitti envisions the Chiefs possibly offering a value contract to Jacobs, posing a potential threat to the Raiders’ retention efforts. Losing Jacobs, especially to a rival like the Chiefs, would be a significant blow for the Raiders.

Concerns about Jacobs’ future as the lead back for the Raiders are compounded by his recent performance. In his fifth season, Jacobs is experiencing a dip in production, averaging 60.1 yards per game and 3.3 yards per attempt, the lowest of his career. Despite Spotrac’s estimated contract value of $10.8 million per year, Jacobs needs to demonstrate a return to his previous form to justify such a substantial deal.

Interim head coach Antonio Pierce, who took over in October, has prioritized re-igniting Jacobs, resulting in an improved performance with an average of 84.3 yards per game. The Raiders recognize the importance of utilizing Jacobs to open up opportunities for the entire offense.

In the end, whether Jacobs secures a contract exceeding $40 million over four years will depend on his ability to regain peak form and contribute significantly to the Raiders’ success.
