Sunderland manager Tony Mowbray expressed his team’s frustration regarding their struggle to score goals in the aftermath of their 2-0 loss to Plymouth. Despite the arrivals of Nazariy Rusyn, Hemir Semedo, Eliezer Mayenda, and Mason Burstow during the summer transfer window, none have managed to score their first goals this season.
When asked whether the younger players will glean lessons from recent games, Mowbray responded, “There haven’t been many matches where we haven’t dominated or failed to score. Even in the Leicester away game, we had fantastic opportunities but ended up losing 1-0. Scoring when the chances arise is crucial.”
He added, “Football demands putting the ball between the posts and celebrating with the fans. If you keep hitting the post, sending shots over the bar, or facing the goalkeeper too often, those moments won’t happen. It’s not that we’re not creating opportunities in front of goal. We had 24 shots, not three with none on target. It’s frustrating, and we need to improve. But it’s a learning curve for young or inexperienced players, especially those from abroad like France, Spain, and Ukraine, who are adapting to the demands of the English Championship.”
Mowbray emphasized, “They’ll understand that this league features robust defenders who block shots, disrupt efforts, or challenge physically in aerial duels. They need to adapt; the English Championship is an extremely competitive and demanding league.”
Sunderland is gearing up for their next Championship encounter against Huddersfield at the Stadium of Light on Wednesday, followed by an away trip to Millwall this weekend.
