MLB History Highlights

1916 – A notable decision by the National Commission reshapes the treatment of injured players in MLB. The ruling mandates that injured players are entitled to full pay for the entire duration of their contracts, a departure from the previous practice of clubs suspending players after 15 days of pay through the injury clause.

1948 – Stan Musial achieves legendary status by being named MVP of the National League following an extraordinary individual season. Musial’s impressive stats, including a .365 average, 135 runs scored, 131 RBI, 230 hits, 46 doubles, 18 triples, and a .702 slugging percentage, lead him to this prestigious recognition. His 39 home runs fell just short of Johnny Mize and Ralph Kiner.

1963 – The Angels engage in a significant trade, sending outfielder Leon Wagner to Cleveland in exchange for pitcher Barry Latman and a player to be named later, revealed to be first baseman Joe Adcock.

1991 – The New York Mets make a splash in the free-agent market, signing outfielder Bobby Bonilla to a lucrative five-year, $29 million contract.

1995 – A piece of baseball history changes hands as Michael Stirn, the fan who caught the ball hit by Cal Ripken, Jr. for a home run on the night he broke Lou Gehrig’s consecutive game streak, sells it to a Maryland businessman for $41,736.

2013 – The Orioles make a strategic move by trading closer Jim Johnson, known for back-to-back 50-save seasons, to the Athletics in exchange for second baseman Jemile Weeks. Additionally, the A’s secure free agent pitcher Scott Kazmir with a two-year deal worth $22 million. This move anticipates the potential departure of starter Bartolo Colon and closer Grant Balfour to free agency. While Kazmir’s signing proves beneficial, Johnson faces a downturn and earns unconditional release by mid-season.
