Newcastle United might be compelled to engage in emergency transfers during the January window due to their persistent injury woes. The ongoing injury crisis, especially in the goalkeeping department following Nick Pope’s exit during the victory against Manchester United, could prompt the team to seek immediate reinforcements.
The 31-year-old goalkeeper sustained a dislocated shoulder, potentially sidelining him for the rest of the season, pending further scans to ascertain the necessity of surgery. Eddie Howe hinted at this likelihood, indicating a probable absence of around four to five months from the field.
Although Newcastle possesses backup options like Martin Dubravka, along with Loris Karius and Mark Gillespie, discussions about potential January signings are underway to address the situation.
According to reports from The Daily Mail, David de Gea emerges as a plausible choice for Newcastle to provide temporary cover during Pope’s absence. The former Manchester United goalkeeper, now a free agent after concluding his long tenure at Old Trafford last summer, has been linked with Chelsea and David Beckham’s Inter Miami recently. Some Manchester United supporters have criticized the decision to replace De Gea with Andre Onana in the summer.
With a scarcity of free-agent goalkeepers presently available, De Gea appears as the primary candidate for a short-term deal with Newcastle, unless the club opts to wait until January to pursue a loan deal from another team.
Last season, Newcastle swiftly recruited Karius on a short-term contract when Dubravka departed for Manchester United, and Karl Darlow suffered an injury during training. Goalkeeper reinforcement isn’t the only area Newcastle might consider strengthening temporarily.
