ROTHERHAM UNITED will name Leam Richardson as their new permanent manager. The Millers have been without a full-time manager for three and a half weeks after parting ways with Matt Taylor, who has since gone to work for League One club Bristol Rovers.
Leeds-born Richardson, 44, who left Latics in November 2022, has been one of the frontrunners for the job since Taylor was fired on November 13. The Yorkshireman, who has also managed Accrington Stanley, was Paul Cook’s assistant at Wigan until taking over when the Liverpudlian left in the summer of 2020 following the club’s relegation to League One due to a points deduction as a result of administration.
Richardson won promotion to the Championship for the second time in 2021-22, after securing survival in the club’s first season back in League One.
They were crowned champions after defeating the Millers.
Richardson recently told the Wigan Observer that his hiatus from managing has replenished his batteries for the next task.
He stated: “In my professional journey, I’ve taken time to assess my career, holding onto my core beliefs while letting go of less significant aspects. This phase has allowed me to expand my knowledge by observing diverse disciplines within sports.
“Equally important, it has given me the chance to recharge before setting my sights on the future and my forthcoming challenge. When the opportunity arises, I’m confident I’ll recognize it as the right fit for me. Equally vital is the hope that they will see me as the right choice for them.”
Several other potential candidates have been associated with the managerial position at Millers since it became vacant. Nathan Jones, the former head of Luton, Stoke, and Southampton, declined the role. Mark Warburton, previously with Glasgow Rangers, Brentford, and Nottingham Forest, along with Gary Rowett, the former manager of Millwall, Derby, and Stoke, were also considered, alongside former Millers boss Steve Evans.
Rotherham will host Swansea, who are currently without a manager, on Saturday.
