Toto Wolff’s legal battle with the FIA: Hamilton joins the fray details emerge

The Formula 1 drama involving Toto Wolff, his wife Susie Wolff, and the FIA took a new turn at the FIA awards gala in Baku. Lewis Hamilton, present to receive his trophy for third place in the 2023 season, found himself amidst the unfolding story that saw FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem suddenly citing illness and a concussion just before the event.

The timing of Ben Sulayem’s reduced visibility coincided with Toto Wolff breaking his silence on a controversial FIA investigation that had been dismissed. The investigation revolved around alleged exchanges of confidential information involving Susie Wolff, who currently serves as the managing director of the F1 Academy series.

Toto Wolff stated that he is in active legal exchange with the FIA and demanded full transparency about the investigation while reserving all legal rights. Susie Wolff, caught in the midst of the controversy, speculated that she might be “collateral damage” in an attack aimed elsewhere, expressing gratitude for the unified support from Mercedes’ F1 team rivals.

Lewis Hamilton took a stand against the FIA leadership, particularly Ben Sulayem, criticizing the questioning of Toto Wolff’s credibility “without any evidence.” Hamilton highlighted a broader tension within F1’s governing body, suggesting that certain individuals within the FIA leadership are trying to impede progress in the sport. He emphasized the need for a change in this approach.

The ongoing saga raises questions about the transparency and credibility of the FIA and points to underlying tensions within the organization. As legal discussions continue, the controversy surrounding the Wolffs and the FIA adds another layer of complexity to the Formula 1 landscape.
