Marcus Harris declared his intention to enter the NFL Draft with a social media post Tuesday night, following a first-team All-SEC season as one of the greatest interior defensive linemen in the country.
Harris made a move to Auburn from Kansas after the 2020 season and showed steady improvement throughout his three-year tenure as a starter at Auburn. His breakthrough came in the 2023 season, where he led Auburn in various defensive stats, registering seven sacks, 11 tackles for loss, and a remarkable 40 tackles, a figure that surpassed any other Auburn defensive lineman.
Although he had the option to return for another college season in 2024, Harris opted to go professional following an incredibly productive year. It remains unclear whether he will participate in Auburn’s upcoming appearance in the Music City Bowl against Maryland on Dec. 30.
He played a pivotal role as a leader within Auburn’s defensive unit, especially under a new coaching setup. Harris significantly contributed to Auburn’s defensive transformation this year, particularly in shoring up their run defense, which was anticipated to be a weak point for the team this season.
Pro Football Focus recognized Harris among the top 20 defensive linemen in the nation for his performance this season.
His departure does leave Auburn with a shortage in their defensive line for the upcoming season. Consequently, players like Justin Rogers will have an increased role, while reserves such as Quientrail Jamison-Travis will need to step up. Additionally, incoming freshmen like Harris’ younger brother, Malik Blocton, might make an early impact. Auburn has also been active in seeking interior defensive linemen through the transfer portal.
