Auburn seems to be in a favorable position to secure the transfer of highly-touted defensive back AJ Harris, who recently entered the transfer portal from Georgia. The news of Harris’ intention to transfer surfaced on Friday, and the connection between Harris and Auburn appears to be gaining momentum.
AJ Harris, a former 5-star recruit and standout defensive back from Central High School in Phenix City, Alabama, is no stranger to the Auburn area, located just 40 minutes east of his high school. During his recruitment, Harris received offers from major programs such as Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, LSU, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Texas, and USC. His impressive credentials as the second-best cornerback in the 2023 recruiting cycle and the top prospect in the state of Alabama have fueled the speculation around his potential move to Auburn.
The social media interactions between Auburn commit Cam Coleman and Harris have added fuel to the rumors. Coleman, who recently flipped from Texas A&M to Auburn, posted on his Instagram story, urging Harris to “come home.” Additionally, Auburn running back Damari Alston reposted the news, accompanied by a lock emoji, suggesting that the Tigers might have Harris “locked down.”
The online buzz reached a higher level when CBS Sports’ Phillip Duke, on the social platform X (formerly Twitter), confirmed that Harris joining Auburn appears to be a “real possibility” and could happen soon. If this transfer materializes, it would be a significant addition to Auburn’s defensive back unit, particularly as they look to fill the void left by departing veterans DJ James, Nehemiah Pritchett, and Jaylin Simpson, all of whom are set to go pro in 2024.
The potential acquisition of AJ Harris would not only bolster Auburn’s defensive backfield but also further define the impact of Hugh Freeze’s 2024 recruiting class, especially with key players like Cam Coleman already committing to the Tigers.
