Bills HC Sean McDermott’s Postgame Decision on James Cook Stirs Controversy

After a standout performance by Buffalo Bills running back James Cook, gaining 221 total yards and scoring two touchdowns in a 31-10 win against the Dallas Cowboys, head coach Sean McDermott’s decision to award the game ball to quarterback Josh Allen has sparked controversy. Despite Cook’s impressive individual rushing performance, McDermott chose to recognize Allen, who set an NFL record in the game by achieving both a rushing and passing touchdown for the 10th time this season.

The decision drew criticism from some fans, with one expressing surprise on social media. McDermott has faced scrutiny in the past for his treatment of Cook, notably benching him after a fumble in a previous game, a decision that former Bills running back Fred Jackson criticized.

However, it’s important to note that the video showing McDermott’s postgame remarks and the presentation of the game ball to Allen is just a snippet of the entire speech. McDermott could have recognized Cook separately, as the clip began with praise for Cook’s total yardage. McDermott has a history of giving out multiple game balls.

Cook’s outstanding game against the Cowboys was historic for the Bills, as he recorded 179 rushing yards and 221 scrimmage yards. This marked the most production by a running back in club history with limited touches, and Cook achieved these impressive stats in only 39 of the Bills’ 68 offensive snaps. McDermott, during his postgame press conference, expressed gratitude for leading the team and commended the players who played through injuries.
