Washington Commanders Release Wide Receiver Michael Strachan
The Washington Commanders have made a roster adjustment ahead of the upcoming season, officially releasing wide receiver Michael Strachan. The move comes as the team continues to evaluate depth across the roster and make tough decisions before finalizing the group that will carry into the regular season.
Strachan, originally drafted by the Indianapolis Colts in the seventh round of the 2021 NFL Draft, has always been seen as a player with intriguing upside due to his rare size and athleticism. At 6-foot-5 and over 220 pounds, the receiver brought a physical profile that stood out immediately. During his time with the Colts, he flashed big-play potential in training camp and preseason action but struggled to carve out a consistent role in the offense once the regular season began.
After spending three seasons with Indianapolis, Strachan was picked up by Washington in hopes that a change of scenery and offensive system could spark his development. The Commanders, now under the leadership of new head coach Dan Quinn and general manager Adam Peters, have been actively reshaping the roster throughout the offseason. For Strachan, however, the competition at wide receiver proved difficult to overcome.
Washington currently features a solid group of pass-catchers headlined by Terry McLaurin and Jahan Dotson, both of whom are firmly entrenched as starters. The battle for the remaining receiver spots has been fierce, with players like Dyami Brown, Olamide Zaccheaus, and rookie prospects fighting to secure their places on the depth chart. In that context, Strachan was unable to make enough of an impression to stay on the 90-man roster heading into the critical stages of preseason.
For Strachan, being released does not necessarily mark the end of his NFL journey. His physical gifts—particularly his size, catch radius, and red-zone potential—are rare traits that other teams may find appealing. At just 27 years old, he still has time to develop and potentially earn another opportunity elsewhere in the league.
From Washington’s perspective, the move highlights the front office’s ongoing evaluation process as they aim to build a team capable of competing in the NFC East. With the Commanders entering a new era after years of transition, every roster spot is being carefully considered to maximize both immediate impact and long-term potential.
