Colorado Avalanche Sign Forward Brock Nelson to Three-Year Contract Extension
The Colorado Avalanche have made a significant move to bolster their offensive core, announcing on Monday that they have signed veteran forward Brock Nelson to a three-year contract extension. The deal ensures Nelson will remain in Colorado through the 2027-28 NHL season, continuing to provide experience, goal-scoring ability, and leadership to a team that remains in perennial Stanley Cup contention.
Nelson, 32, was acquired by the Avalanche from the New York Islanders ahead of the 2025 NHL Trade Deadline. In his short stint with Colorado following the trade, Nelson made an immediate impact, contributing offensively during the regular season and into the playoffs. Known for his strong two-way play and consistent scoring touch, Nelson quickly earned the trust of head coach Jared Bednar and became a valuable part of the Avalanche’s top-six forward group.

The extension comes as no surprise to those following the team, as both Nelson and the Avalanche front office had publicly expressed mutual interest in a long-term agreement. General Manager Chris MacFarland praised Nelson’s professionalism, versatility, and hockey IQ, stating, “Brock is the type of player every team wants in their lineup. He brings a high level of compete, skill, and leadership. We’re thrilled to keep him in an Avalanche jersey for the next three seasons.”
Nelson’s new contract reportedly carries a cap hit of $5.5 million annually. While the Avalanche continue to navigate the NHL’s flat salary cap era, the deal reflects their confidence in Nelson’s ability to maintain a high level of play as he enters his mid-30s. He has averaged over 20 goals per season throughout his career, and his 6-foot-4 frame and veteran experience make him a reliable contributor in all situations.
Originally drafted 30th overall by the Islanders in the 2010 NHL Draft, Nelson played over a decade with New York, establishing himself as one of the league’s most consistent middle-six forwards. His move to Colorado has revitalized his game, and the Avalanche are hopeful he can maintain that level of production moving forward.
With key players like Nathan MacKinnon, Mikko Rantanen, and Cale Makar already locked into long-term deals, the extension of Nelson adds further stability to Colorado’s core. The Avalanche are clearly in win-now mode, and keeping a proven veteran like Nelson in the fold demonstrates their commitment to chasing another Stanley Cup in the coming years.
