In June 2020, amid the NBA’s suspension due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Memphis Grizzlies President Jason Wexler expressed optimism about the league’s proposed plan to resume the season. The NBA’s Board of Governors had approved a strategy to bring 22 teams to Orlando for eight additional regular-season games followed by a full-scale 16-team playoff.
Wexler acknowledged the complexities involved in formulating this plan, noting that the NBA had to consider numerous factors, many of which were challenging for individual teams to fully grasp. He stated, “There were so many different factors they had to deal with… Given all that they were balancing, we think the structure they came up with… sufficiently address what we had accomplished.”
At that time, the majority of Grizzlies players were in Memphis, preparing for the anticipated return to play. Players were expected to report to their teams by June 22, 2020, to begin training and conditioning in anticipation of the season’s resumption.
Wexler’s background includes serving as the Grizzlies’ Chief Operating Officer before being promoted to President of Business Operations in July 2014. In April 2019, he assumed the role of Team President, overseeing both business and basketball operations.
As the NBA prepared for its return in 2020, Wexler and the Grizzlies organization demonstrated confidence in the league’s approach and readiness to adapt to the unprecedented circumstances.
