Although Barry Bonds has not yet been inducted into Major League Baseball’s Hall of Fame, the San Francisco Giants will honor the legendary slugger with a statue outside their home ballpark.
As reported by The San Francisco Chronicle, a statue of Bonds will be placed outside Oracle Park, the Giants’ stadium. Team CEO Larry Baer made the announcement during an interview on “The Morning Roast” on 95.7 The Game.
Despite holding multiple MLB records—including the all-time home run mark with 762 and the single-season record with 73—Bonds has remained excluded from the Hall of Fame amid longstanding allegations of steroid use during his career.
Baer said that plans to build a statue of Barry Bonds—one of baseball’s all-time greats—are definitely in the works, though still in the early stages. While there’s no finalized timeline or location, he confirmed that honoring Bonds is a priority for the Giants organization.
“Barry is deserving of a statue, and I would say, should be next up,” Baer stated during his interview. “We don’t have the exact location and the exact date and the exact timing, but you’re saying things that we’re totally in sync with. You probably notice Barry’s around a lot, more recently this year and last year as well.”
When the statue is eventually erected, Bonds will join other Giants legends—Willie Mays, Willie McCovey, Orlando Cepeda, Juan Marichal, and Gaylord Perry—who are already commemorated outside Oracle Park.
Bonds, who played 22 seasons in the majors, began his career with the Pittsburgh Pirates before spending the majority of it with San Francisco. Retiring in 2007, he compiled a résumé that includes seven MVP awards, 14 All-Star selections, eight Gold Gloves, and a collection of statistics that would typically guarantee a spot in the Hall of Fame.
