The Baltimore Orioles secured a 2-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Friday, but it came with a setback as first baseman Ryan Mountcastle suffered an injury. In response, the team has decided to call up top prospect Coby Mayo.
According to reports, Mayo, 23, was scratched from the Triple-A Norfolk lineup, as noted by Roch Kubatko of MASN Sports. While it initially sparked speculation, it has since been confirmed that the Orioles are promoting Mayo to the majors.
“Coby Mayo was scratched from AAA Norfolk lineup. Just in case, it appears,” Kubatko reported.
He later added, “Mayo \[is] on his way \[to Baltimore].”
Ryan Mountcastle left Friday’s game after experiencing discomfort in his right hamstring and is currently listed as day-to-day. However, the Orioles’ decision to call up Coby Mayo may suggest that Mountcastle could miss more time. Before exiting, Mountcastle went 2-for-3 with a run scored.
As for Mayo, he’s still working to establish himself at the major league level. This isn’t his first stint with the Orioles, but he has yet to make a strong impression. In limited action, Mayo has posted a .094 batting average and a .186 on-base percentage, with just five hits and no home runs across his career.

Despite the slow start, there’s still optimism surrounding the 23-year-old. Ranked No. 17 overall on MLB’s Top 100 prospects list, Mayo has only logged 53 major league at-bats—hardly enough to draw any definitive conclusions. His appearances have been scattered over the past two seasons, limiting his ability to settle in.
Now, Mayo gets another opportunity to prove himself while the team continues to monitor Mountcastle’s status. There’s a good chance Mayo could be in the lineup as early as Saturday for Game 2 of the Orioles’ three-game series against the White Sox.
