June 3, 2025 | Cincinnati, OH — The Cincinnati Reds announced Tuesday that infielder Jeimer Candelario is heading to Arizona to begin a rehab assignment, marking a key step in his recovery process.
Candelario, who has been sidelined with a shoulder issue since mid-May, will report to the Reds’ spring training complex in Goodyear, Arizona, where he’s expected to ramp up baseball activities and participate in games with the organization’s Arizona Complex League affiliate.
The veteran third baseman signed a three-year, $45 million deal with the Reds this past offseason but has been limited by injuries in the early part of the 2025 campaign. Prior to landing on the injured list, Candelario was hitting .241 with five home runs and 18 RBIs in 36 games.
Reds manager Terry Francona expressed optimism about Candelario’s return. “He’s been progressing well and feels good physically. This is the next step, and we’re hopeful to have him back contributing soon,” Francona told reporters.
The Reds have leaned on a combination of Spencer Steer, Santiago Espinal, and utility players to fill the void at third base during Candelario’s absence. His return would provide a much-needed boost to the Reds’ infield depth and lineup consistency as they aim to stay competitive in the NL Central.
There is currently no exact timetable for Candelario’s return to the major league roster, but the club will evaluate his readiness based on how he performs during the rehab stint.
