Brett McLean Leaves Iowa Wild to Join Vancouver Canucks as Assistant Coach
The Vancouver Canucks have announced a significant addition to their coaching staff, bringing in Brett McLean as an assistant coach. McLean joins the NHL team after spending the 2023-24 season as the head coach of the Iowa Wild, the AHL affiliate of the Minnesota Wild.
McLean’s move to the Canucks marks a new chapter in his coaching career and reunites him with the NHL, where he played over 300 games during his professional career. Known for his leadership and player development skills, McLean brings a wealth of experience and a reputation for fostering young talent—an asset that could prove invaluable to a Canucks team aiming to build on its recent progress.
During his time with the Iowa Wild, McLean was highly regarded for his ability to connect with players and build strong locker room chemistry. Although the team did not qualify for the Calder Cup Playoffs in 2024, McLean’s coaching was praised for laying down a solid developmental foundation for the organization’s prospects. He was also credited with improving the performance of several young players who were later called up to the NHL.

Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin expressed enthusiasm about McLean’s addition to the staff, stating, “We are excited to welcome Brett to the Canucks organization. His ability to develop players and his dedication to building winning culture aligns perfectly with our vision moving forward. We believe he will make a strong impact both behind the bench and in the growth of our younger players.”
This move is also seen as a homecoming of sorts for McLean, who hails from Comox, British Columbia. The opportunity to return to his home province and coach at the NHL level was a major factor in his decision. “It’s a tremendous honor to join the Vancouver Canucks coaching staff,” McLean said in a statement. “Growing up in B.C., this is a dream come true. I’m excited to contribute to a team that’s clearly heading in a positive direction.”
McLean will work under Canucks head coach Rick Tocchet, supporting him in tactical planning, in-game adjustments, and player mentoring. His primary focus is expected to be on the development of forwards and special teams, two areas where the Canucks have shown improvement but continue to seek greater consistency.
With McLean stepping into a new role at the NHL level, the Iowa Wild will now begin their search for a new head coach. The organization thanked McLean for his service and wished him success with the Canucks.
As the Vancouver Canucks continue to reshape their staff and roster in pursuit of postseason success, the addition of Brett McLean is a strong signal that the team is investing in both talent and leadership—on and off the ice.
