CHICAGO (AP) — Cincinnati Reds star Elly De La Cruz played through heartbreak on Sunday following the death of his sister, Genelis.
Despite the devastating news, De La Cruz chose to take the field in the Reds’ 7-3 loss to the Chicago Cubs, hitting a two-run home run and scoring twice. Manager Terry Francona shared that the 23-year-old shortstop was determined to play in the series finale, and the team fully supported his decision.
“He takes so much pride in being available,” Francona said. “Guys like that — Carlos Santana in Cleveland was the same way — and for someone that young, that’s really admirable.”
According to Z101 Digital in the Dominican Republic, Genelis passed away Saturday after battling ongoing health issues.
De La Cruz declined to speak with reporters, and the Reds chose not to provide further details, respecting his wishes.
“It puts things into perspective,” Francona added. “We care so much about winning, but moments like this remind us what truly matters. Everyone made sure to be there for him today.”

De La Cruz singled in the first inning, flied out in the fourth, then launched his 12th home run of the season in the sixth. He later walked and scored on a sacrifice fly by Tyler Stephenson in the ninth.
His milestone 50th career home run was a towering 423-foot shot down the right-field line, leaving the bat at 117.4 mph. As he approached home plate, De La Cruz patted his chest, pointed skyward, clapped, and formed a heart with his hands in a touching tribute.
